1st Build & paint competition

+++1st NYO’MUNDIES+++

With so many unique submissions highlighting different aspects of the Nyo’munda setting, it was difficult to just pick one winner.

So, six were nominated and the decision outsourced to a D6! A further D20 roll decided the winner of the most lucky entry.

You can check out the awards ceremony and the submissions below:

Inquisitor and retinue by Jacopo

(Nominee and winner of luckiest submission)

This is my Inquisitorial Retinue made of Robots. Heretic Technology repurposed to chase Chaos down and repel the Tau invaders by Inquisitor Dalek of the Ordo Machinum. He found shelter in the Zone of Exclusion and his main objective is to  find a starship to leave the planet and call reinforcement.

Retrieval Unit Lateralus by Will

(Nominee)

Yutau-Vejovani Inc. has flourished under Tau occupation, providing Nyo’munda’s new masters with a stream of inexplicably potent drugs and gene-serfs. All, of course, for the Greater Good.

With predictable hubris, the cartel regards the recent crisis of ‘escaped’ laboratory subjects as an exciting opportunity for additional field testing.  Pictured above is Retrieval Unit Lateralus consisting of:

  • Experimental Gene-Servitor 14-12: an example of advanced gene-servitors, now repurposed to hunt down and recapture ‘rogue’ constructs among the spires of Nyo’munda’s Hive Sprawl.
  • Designate-19, Corporate Security Operative: an enhanced human operative provided with bio-armour and the gene-extraction tools necessary to recover corporate assets from ‘non-cooperative’ subjects.
  • Prototype Seeker-Class Servitor 4C7: a new servitor class designed to locate Yutau-Vejovani property by tracking psychic signatures via a localised ‘Hive Mind’ system.

We are assured that such Retrieval Teams have the situation in the city firmly under control. Reports of widespread carnage in the Underhive are either lies spread by corporate saboteurs or the ravings of criminals who have failed to take their government-issue medication.

Its just as I thought, oyabun. Just another bōryokudan, probs the perps from last weeks terror fest at the Vi’shi city mallplex. ID chips in the chrome have been burned out, but its definitely our product, although they retrofitted them with black market installments. The maniacs must have also deactivated their neural safety buffers, seeing how fast they are rolling. Might need more men if I to retrieve the tech without smashing it all to bits…

Rat Auxiliary by Antonio

(Nominee)

I imagine this rat-specie is created in T’au laboratory. Maybe the first exemplars was little, white, and able to find a way to escape from the maze and resist to little electrical shock. As our laboratory mice, for example.

After some experiments, T’au biolologist have reached the results of developing intelligence in their little oblong skulls. Engineers and scientists teached them to use advanced T’au technology, wear specially-fitted armour and guiding drones with a small neural chip connector. Those rat-kind T’au servants are generally used to control and keep secure the sewer maze under Nyo’To’Kyo city.

Ridgerunner by Theo

(Nominee)

The cabin of the Ridgerunner was not entirely unlike his old Devilfish.

It had required some tinkering by the Earth caste of course, but now, as the little truck sped across the dunes of the exclusion zone, Shas’ui To’jo was starting to understand why Humans were so fond of the Ridgerunner.

It lacked many of the facilities offered by Tau technology, but it did its job well, ferrying him and his small crew around the perimeter of the White Zone, as his spotter surveyed the horizon for any sign of Imperial resistance that might tarnish the otherwise serene landscape.

To’jo was surprised by the speed and agility offered by the old wheels, so much so that when Fio’ui Nishi’no had offered to remove the things in exchange for more advanced antigrav repulsors, he had declined.

Suvar Tiroc, Exlusion Zone Survivor by Nik

Suvar Tiroc tensed as a heard a noise, raised his maul and glanced about as he slowly reached for his las pistol. ‘Halt.. who goes there?’ his voice cold and metallic, over the respirator of his rebreather mask. Motionless he stood over his loot, waiting, anticipating...

Max Supreme, gameshow contestant, by John

Combining the technology of Hunting Rigs and Chrono Gladiators, a new form of entertainment was born and broadcast on the network for all of Nyomunda to see.
“Contestants” selected from the prison population are fitted with an artificial heart connected to a timer and dropped in the exclusion zone with only 12 hours on the timer. Each kill gets them 30 minutes, and if the timer ever reaches 0 their heart shuts down.

Max Supreme with his Or’es Rig is the longest running contestant so far, and has became quite popular with viewers round the planet. Many Nyo-Net executives are starting to consider that he may live long enough to get out of the exclusion zone, and planetary government dislikes that a political prisoner is getting so much love from the population. A change of rules may be required to put an end to his time on the show.

Jhi’Por’la, the Twisted Trader, by Luke

“Jhi’Por’La” is not a title applied often, for it refers to a being of ancient Tau mythology, the Twisted Trader.
Nevertheless, one crime lord of Nyo’Munda has styled himself thus, referring to his seeming exile from the Greater Good, and taking on Gue’Vesa traits. He is ruthless and efficient, and has amassed quite a fortune in the last few years.
He is rarely seen without Gue’vesa guards, equipped in the finest stolen or looted gear, and dresses in a way most unbecoming of one of the Tau’vesa- covered in shimmering silks and bright colours. His trademark wide-brimmed leather hat is always decorated with a flamboyant feather.

Lofibushi by Mykola

– Five mercs and one left hand ago you tried to answer me wrong. I’m asking one last time – who sent you?

A barely alive thug croaked through the mash of blood and teeth:

– You know how they say: ‘Once a corpo …’

*****A note from the Water parliamentary inner mailing, Vi’Shi.*****

‘Once a corpo – always a corpo’, – this thought is cherished in each cartel, but there is always someone wanting more.

In the old days, such a dissent was punished with all indisputable power of the contract as an attemptat corporate sabotage. When Tau arrived at Vi’Shi, some cartels were torn apart by internal conflicts, and those who had been trying to keep their structure, were forced to revise the terms and conditions of the contract in order not to face such a catastrophe.

However, these changes were tacit and selective, due to the corporations’ attempts to maintain the appearance of invulnerable monoliths. For those few who had reached high ranks in the hierarchy and wanted to leave the cartel, the ‘Last Service’ option was available. Not everyone went for it due to it being like jumping over the mist abyss.

However, those rare individuals who managed to do so had the opportunity to leave the cartel and start a new life as a lofibushi – a highly qualified freelancer without past. The individual could receive a new name, freedom to act freely, and independence from the cartel. The only inviolable condition was to never take tasks against the cartel.

The life of a lofibushi was like a free run through the maze, where other Vi’Shi’s inhabitants got lost.

Zoryek Korh, kroot hunter, by Isaak

Zoryekh Korh is a skilled kroot hunter who eschews most of the tau equipment the earth caste foists upon him in favor of his traditional kroot rifle. He stalks his prey through the exclusion zone through traditional methods, but gets the job done better than any of the fire caste’s snipers.

Buckshot Blake, inquisitorial agent, by Steve

Master Sergeant Blake Smeth or ‘Buckshot Blake’ as he is sometime referred to by newer recruits (though never to his face).
In a world of espionage, spies and convoluted plans, Blake fills a simple role; when Inquisitor Dernest needs something killed quickly and violently, Blake gets the job done. A man of decisive action and few words, Blake let’s other do the planning while he does the killing. Loyalty and faith in the Emperor are the guiding principles and have kept him alive longer than most guardsmen.
A non-native to Nyomunda, Blake unquestioningly followed his master planet-side after the Inquisitor learned of the defeat of the Imperial Tithe fleet at the hands of the xenos invaders. He is not privy to whatever plan the Inquisitor has concocted for the reclamation of Nyomunda, and he does not ask. That is how it has always been; Dernest leading and Blake stoically following.
For years the Inquisitor has led his band of hardened and diverse followers across Nyomunda, stirring rebellion, relieving secretive Tau convoys of their mysterious cargoes, brutally executing collaborators and traitors. Blake has been in the thick of it, learning swiftly that a heavy load of lead was the best means to stop a barbarian kroot in its tracks or send the cowardly Tau ducking for cover while pissing their pants.
Things are changing though. No longer content with small victories, Dernest seems to be on the verge of something big, something that will tip the scales of the shadowy war firmly in favour of the Emperor’s servants. Whatever it is, it has to be linked to the sickly glowing vials the Inquisitor now hurries towards an unknown destination. Blake doesn’t think about what the vials contain, where they are going or why the Tau are so hell-bent on finding and eliminating the Inquisitor and his entourage.
There are many obstacles on the road to success, but Blake has yet to encounter one that a shotgun can’t overcome.

Civil Defence Battlesuit by Jon

This is a Civil Defence battlesuit. Collaborationist ex-PDF forces have worked hard to develop battlesuits to emulate those of the Tau occupiers. With limited technological transfer, success has been mixed. These Civil Defence suits typically offer reasonable protection and carry heavy weapon loadouts, but lack the mobility and sophisticated support systems of a Tau equivalent.

Yan’go, Bor’ka, Kroot bounty hunter by Rafael

Yan’go Bor’ka, Bounty Hunter, been called a lot of stuff in his life, dirty bastard, Kroot Poser and a true professional among them, born in the Hive Cities, learning from a Kroot mentor that spared his life, he as climbed the ranks among Fixers and Rogue Traders, finding his footing as a Freelancer of the Mercenary guild, he as learned a thousand way to hunt a criminal, and a lot more of how to get extra money of any job. Armed with a Bolt-heated crossbow, Retro-Fitted and hacked Eversor-tech helmet, and Crosshair, a trained bioluminiscent xeno lifeform, and a slew of dirty tricks in his belt, You would be hard pressed to find a better worker to find your prey.

Rafael, where you at?

Bridge of Light, Imperium loyalist hideout, by William

Once a domestic trade check point, the Bridge of Light is a haven for the Imperial Resistance. The crossing which was once over a treacherous river now finds itself in a barren desert deep into the exclusion zone. The Tau rulers build dams upstream to tame the ever flooding river and harness its energy for the Greater Good. All the bridge sees now is a seasonal trickle which drags waste from the derelict cities nearby.

The bridge is known among the resistance as a place of reverence to The Emperor and many of the faithful leave a seal atop the bridge when they pass through. The band that operate out of it have dug further into the storage tunnels that sat under it before the invasion and now use the elaborate cave system to ambush any unwanted guests.

The concept

Yay, it’s another one of those convert-a-miniature-and-paint-it-competitions! This one is organized to celebrate the launch of the NYO’MUNDA setting and website, and to encourage people to discover less familiar parts of the Warhammer 40K universe.

Ofcourse, the best submission and the most lucky submission (i.e. randomly chosen) will get some fresh schwag!

How to participate

  • Read the website and get some inspiration! Your creation should exemplify or expand on the setting in a suitable way. We recommend you start on the homepage.
  • Build and paint a miniature that fits the setting and post atleast one WIP picture. You can enter a single miniature , a vehicle, a warband, a terrain piece or a diorama. You post WIP pictures on Instagram with the hashtag #NYOMUNDA, or post one on Facebook in the Nyo’munda group, or in The Inquisitorium. I’ll check this to make sure people don’t enter miniatures they’ve already finished way before the setting was even a thing.
  • Mail a maximum of 4 pictures of your finished submission to kolderkunst@gmail.com. Feel free to also include some additional WIP pictures of well. You can optionally also include some accompanying lore text (1A4 as the absolute maximum, but trust me when I say that less is more) and/or a piece of artwork in another medium (painting, drawing, interpretive dance,…). Ofcourse, go ahead and share your finished work online for others to admire as well!
  • Submission deadline is 3/1/2021. That’s the 3rd of January, what would it be otherwise? The 1st of March? Don’t be ludicrous!
  • Two winners will be picked, by 11/1/2021 at the latest.
  • One prize will be awarded to the best submission, which will be judged on converting/kitbashing, painting and accompanying lore/art. Creativity, craftmanship and artistry are just as important as technical painting skill. In the case of a tie between multiple people (so many of you are just so damn good) the winner will be chosen at random from a selection of best submissions.
  • The second winner will be chosen totally at random. So every participant has a chance to win one of the two prizes! The only minimum requirement is to submit something that shows atleast a modicum of effort (not just grabbing a standard cadian guardsman you have laying around and saying “yeah ‘e fights on niyomunda”. You get the point.)
  • The prizes will be sent with the national post service and marked as a gift. Feel free to compete from any country. Well, except for you North Korea.

The prizes

Each prize package contains the following items, worth at least 70 euro:

Sergeant ‘Ripper’ Jackson!

A GW store exclusive miniature.

Surprisingly modular and easily converted, into a Hive Sprawl Gang Leader or an battle hardened Exclusion Zone survivor, or something else entirely.

One pack of Maelstrom’s Edge Broken infantry, enough to make 6 miniatures, with -lots- of bits to spare.

In hard plastic, highly modular. 4 sprues. May contains traces of alien heads.

More info here and here

Two pets of your choice from the “The Druid Was Right!” Dungeons & Lasers kickstarter stretch goals.

Made in hard plastic, so easy to convert.

You can see the full line-up if you click here.

Lots and lots of basing material

Textured plasticard, different forms of paving and bricks, neon pink pigment powder, some MDF pallettes, razorwire, and lots of shrubbery, from moss to atleast twenty different kinds of tufts and flowers,…

All in fairly small sample sizes, but an impressive collection all together, perfect for trying out some new basing techniques. Decorate your base in the style of some overgrown ruins, or an industrial or hive setting.

Three monopose space marines

We like our oldskool retro vibes here on Nyo’Munda. Perfect for testing new color schemes, or if you’re looking for an excuse to paint goblin green bases.

Package padding

To prevent everything from shaking about, I’ll stuff the packages full. With what? Noone knows. Not even me.

Might be edible, if you put in some effort.
